How about some good news?

Free Business Workshops – Lake Wales Main Street is partnering with Polk State College to offer free business workshops. The first workshop will be Thursday August 6th at 5:30 PM in the Community Room at PSC, JD Alexander Center on Central Ave. in downtown Lake Wales.

The informal workshops will cover a wide range of helpful topics for local small businesses. All downtown business owners are welcome to attend and any business member of Main Street can attend.

Please RSVP to info@lakewalesmainstreet.com if you would like to attend the August 6th workshop. If you have any questions or suggestions for future workshop topics, please call Jan Privett at 863-224-1970.

History in the Making – Arcadia Publishing has accepted Main Street’s book proposal! The new publication will be a pictorial history of Lake Wales and is scheduled for release in the fall of 2010.

On the front page of the publisher’s website is a quote, “Within every photograph, in every American city, are stories to be told.” Arcadia Publishing is the leading publisher of local histories in the United States, with over 5,000 titles in print and hundreds of new titles released every year.

We plan to produce a quality, accurate book about Lake Wales history that fills in some of the areas not covered by previous local history books.

We need photographs of people, places and events that were taken in and around Lake Wales before 1940. Photos of historic occasions would be great. But we also want pictures of ordinary people from every walk of life going about their daily lives in homes, schools, churches, cattle and citrus, or railroad and turpentine industries, etc.

Old photographs of our community are precious. Let us honor yours and possibly include it in this new book to celebrate the history of Lake Wales. If we use your photos, we will return them along with a restored, high resolution digital copy that will help preserve the image for the future.

All royalties from sales of the book will go to Lake Wales Main Street and our mission to make Downtown Lake Wales an historical site destination for everyday business, shopping, and leisure activities.
